The First Play

Saturday 16 - Sptember 11: 'Beauty in a Broken Place'.

"In Colm Tóibín's debut play Beauty in a Broken Place , Sean O'Casey recalls the people and events surrounding the 1926 premiere of his controversial play The Plough and The Stars . Tóibín's unusual and provocative memory play manages to be both serious and mischievous in its depiction of 'The Plough' riots, an event which not only tested the cultural, political and artistic freedoms of the nascent Irish State but also of the Abbey Theatre itself, a debate which is as relevant today as it was over seventy years ago."
